I have done a lot of work for Mid-Atlantic Title over the years. They have had times when they were a bit slow paying, but never this bad. Recently they sent me a search, which I called and told them I would have to refuse, as we hadn't been paid for jobs dating back to January, and that I was aware that they were way behind with another abstractor that covers some of the same counties I do. Because we serve rural counties where there are few independent abstractors available, they didn't have anywhere else to go. They got current with me, and I did the search.
However, they never paid the other abstractor, and she refused to do any more work for them, having open invoices back 7 months. They tried to get me to do the work, not realizing that the abstractors out here all know each other and work cooperatively rather than competitively for the most part.
I refused the work, and told them why, which caught them off guard, of course. It was not just out of loyalty and friendship that I refused the work, though that was part of it. It was also a realization that if they were not paying her, then it would be a long time before I ever saw any more money for any work that I do for Mid-Atlantic Title.
Beware, folks. They're clearly in trouble.
