Too bad that it only took a century between the end of the Civil War and the Civil Rights Act of 1964/Voting Rights Act Act of 1967 to effectuate full constitutional rights... not too mention the Supreme Court's Ruling in Brown V. The Board of Education, and enforcement of the order by federal troops in the southern states.
King's membership in the Republican Party does not seem to have been worth much. He led protest marches, boycotts and sit ins until 1968. So much for the Grand Old Party.
I would not credit either party for the advancement of civil rights. It was the public outcry for change that forced administrations of both parties to enact change.
