This is the first time this has ever happened to me. I went into the Alpena County Clerks office to check if there was a divorce judgement. I was told that the public terminal was in use by geneology researchers but they could check at the counter for me but would charge me $10.00.! I refused to pay and of course they would not check the name for me. I am shocked that the County Clerk is able to charge a fee to search a public record. i was very clear that I did not want a "history" only a quick name check for a possible divorce. Does anyone know if Michigan law allows this?
