Another non-payer. Urban Settlement first stopped paying for any copies; then stopped paying for any work at all. They owe us $652.50, which isn't huge, but it's "the principal of the matter". And they have the nerve to have a bad attitude toward us when we ask for payment. When I asked for Accounts Payable contact, I was given a phone number (by 2 people) that is answered by a machine, stating "the number you have dialed, xxx-xxxx, is unavailable". What nerve! Back in December when we had our first dispute over copy costs, I offered to compromise at a slightly higher "flat fee" which would include copies. They quit using us immediately. Now I made the same offer again and they refused. They want us to do their job for them, not send them copies of mortgages, liens, etc., because they don't have the ability or desire to read them. They insist that we just abstract the information. We believe that creates opportunity for error; it takes more time; and it puts us in a position of "practicing law" by interpretting a document. We prefer to send the copies so that client has all information. Interestingly, Urban uses the same forms and has the same database of "abstractor information" as another deadbeat client, Title Source.
