Raise rates. One client balked and left us 2 years ago after 2 years of great service because of the influx of fly-by-night opportunists. The shakeout of these crappy researchers occurred and our client came back to us. Our rate increased but they have no place else to go. Too bad they didn't just remain with us as a good client at our former rate. Neither our past rate was unfair nor is our current increase for them punative, but it sent a clear message that they are paying for quality in a limited field.
I've also seen others arrive with junk searches in-hand, missing documents and with incomplete legal descriptions and more. They say "I bought it from Fly By Night Title, but I can't find them around. Can you review it for the same twenty bucks I paid the first time?" My price quote drives them away for a day or two before they return, tail between legs and beg for mercy. Not too embellished, and essentially true.... amazing market.
Lower your costs. Get a digital camera and eliminate copy fees. Raise your research rate. Provide great service. Stick in there.
