I read about this on the White House website and, while I absolutely agree that everyone should have a home - whether renting or buying - I also believe that it is indeed part of the American Dream to own a home.
On a personal level, when I read about this new focus of the Obama administration, I felt there was something fundamentally wrong with the idea. It reminds me quite a bit of England, when we had true landlords who owned vast amounts of land and people lived on that land at the landlord's mercy. This might be because my father is British, but either way, it is the wrong direction for our nation to head. Our entire nation is built upon the idea that everyone has an equal opportunity to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and have a successful life.
The focus upon renting over owning is telling the American people that we cannot be responsible enough to buy and take care of our own property. This simply isn't true.
Just to rant on a more personal level, I got into the real estate/title industry because of an interest in home ownership and the concept that I - at 19 years old - could own a home and be a landlord. The idea that now another person of that age's highest ambition may be to rent because that's what the government wants them to focus on upsets me greatly.
There you go, that's my two cents. Thanks for always posting such thought provoking stuff, Robert; you're good at catching my interest and getting me to react!
