I know JUST what you're talking about.  When I started working for a law firm in 1975 the typing pool (!!) had two levels of competence- the first tier used manual typewriters; the second got to use IBM Selectrics (hoo doggie).  You knew you'd arrived when your manual machine was carted away & replaced with an electric typewriter.
