Certificates of insurance are routinely issued by insurance carriers. They are evidence of insurance coverage. It details the extent of coverage, the identity of the insured, etc.
In many states evidence of insurance coverage may not be admissable at trial because it may result in an inflated jury verdict. However, one of the standard questions in pretrial interrogatories is an inquiry into whether there is an insurer who has denied coverage under an insurance policy. To some extent the insurance certificate contains answers to follow up questions in the interrogatories.
