Over 20 years ago I met an elderly gentleman whose business as a younger man was to research properties with title clouds, find the chain break, identify potential claimants to the dangling property interests, and contact them for a finders fee.

There is a name to this industry which eludes me now, and it's been a very long time since I've heard of anyone doing this.

It comes to mind, as I've had a number of title chains in the 1800's over the years where there is a broken chain of title.

Is anyone doing this sort of work and if so, what is the typical "finders fee" for such work? 

The older gentleman is long passed, but he offered to share his files with me years ago;  an offer I probably should have taken up...young and foolish, I guess.
