A client was hit by this scam. The client deposited the check in his trust account, and the bank verified that it was cleared. Luckily my clients Spidey sense kicked in and he called the Canadian Law firm and found out that the check was a fake.
Apparantly, the fraudsters play on the system under which checks are cleared. The routing number on the check is off by a digit or two and that will cause the check to take much longer (weeks) to bounce. From what I have been told the check goes from Fed bank to Fed bank until it is finally dishonored.
Next week I am attending a seminar in which an FBI agent will be talk about this scam, and others. I let y'all know what the FBI has to say.
