Robert's right, of course (he's the attorney - I just read a lot and take courses on corporate entities and layering of companies to CYA for liability and for legal tax bennies), that setting up an LLC is not time-intensive or costly when you consider the benefits it provides.
Sole proprietors enjoy few of the benefits of LLCs or corporations in protection from liability as well as in the tax & write-offs department. I've tried to tell my girlfriend (who is a graphic designer with a company name but who is a sole proprietor) a zillion times that her tax benefits she'd gain would easily pay off the cost of setting up an LLC. She doesn't have to worry about liability as much as we do in this business but she's not able to write off many of the expenses she could as a corporation. As independent abstractors, I don't think the gains in the tax department would be as important as shielding oneself from liability.
