In the beginning.   The only sort of indexing 'legally' required by a county in the state of MN, was the grantor/grantee book.   With that you would search by name as either the grantor or grantee of a parcel of land.  But most counties would also run index books.   There were numerous books, and each book was subdivided into Section-Township-Range.   Then each Sec-Twp-Rng would be broken down further into Quarter and Quarter/Quarters.    Then as an abstractor, it would be my duty to find the Sec-Twp-rng to a parcel and then go to that particular quarter-quarter/quarter and then look at each and every entry.   There was always room for human error with this also.   So that is why, the Grantor/Grantee took presidence over all.   However, in 2003 when my counties went computerized.   The Grantor/Grantee books are history as are all of the index books.
