I heard a joke from an independent bookseller years ago - something along the lines of "...if you want to make a million dollars selling books - start with two". I ran across an invoice dated August 19, 1958 from the law firm of Oot, Oot & Moore to my parents regarding the purchase of a house in Syracuse, NY. It runs as follows:
Recording Deed $3.00
Stamps on deed $18.15
Recording mortgage $6.00
Mortgage Tax $74.00
Recording Discharge $2.00
Drawing Bond & Mortgage $10.00
EXAMINATION OF TITLE $148.50. Presumably this was a full, 50 year search, done at the Registry or it's NY equivalent, utilizing typewritten indices with handwritten abstracting onto forms or plain paper abstracting. I have no idea what the equivalent of $148.50 would be in 2012 dollars, but I am willing to bet that whatever the sum would be, we're not getting it.
