From the Atlantic Monthly for September 2013
I thought, at first reading, that this would be a fairly standard blah blah about the evils of Wall Street jumping back into the real estate market & so on, but towards the end of the article they described a concept that caught my eye. It's a company that runs applicants through the process as if they were going to purchase a house with credit checks, employment history etc. Rather than selling them a house from their available stock; they rent them the house with an option to buy. Not such a bad idea. I agree with Sam Zell that managing rentals all over the country with 24 hour maintenance would be a nightmare & probably untenable, but it's better than letting properties go to rack & ruin.
