[-] UPDATE: Changes to the business directory-- sorting by location - Slade Smith/OH (11 replies)

Hi folks,

David Bloys had a good suggestion that we show in the business directory the distance from the physical location of a business and the county being searched, so that users of the directory can easily see if they are doing business with a business local to the area in which they need the search.  So I have changed the business directory so that by default the businesses will be ordered by proximity to the county being searched.

A few things to note:

  • If you have misspelled your city in your company listing, the system won't be able to find your city, and you'll sink to the bottom of the list no matter how near you actually are.  I'd advise everyone to check the directory for their business and make sure that you aren't showing up as 5000 miles away from all the counties you serve.
  • For some unusual place names, it may be important to use certain abbreviations or particular spacing.  If you are unsure, look up your city at http://www.geonames.org/.  That's the database I am using for geo-location, so if your city name matches the spelling they use, it should work.  I've tried to account for some of the common ones like "Fort", "Mount", "St." etc. but I know there are others.  If you have a problem that you can't fix, let me know.
  • We may have some counties misspelled.  In that case, everybody's business will show as being thousands of miles away in that county.  If you find a county like that, let me know and I will correct it.
  • The ordering of the Enhanced Listings at the top has not changed-- I left that random so all businesses will rotate in turn to the very top.  However, I did add the Enhanced Listings to the "regular" list also, and in that list they will appear in order of proximity to the county, just like everyone else.

As always, if you have any other problems or notice any glitches, let me know by sending an email to slade (at) sourceoftitle dot com.
