I appreciate your response, Mr. Rutledge, but I really wasn't inviting a debate on this.  I've heard those old arguments and have already conducted exhaustive and critical analyses of each of those issues.  What you're essentially talking about here is a creative and clever set of interpretive acrobatics which attempt to make the case that the Bible doesn't "really" mean what it clearly says.  Such assertions are unsustainable because they are what Biblical scholars refer to as eisegetic, i.e., superimposing one's own thoughts, ideas and biases over the true meaning of the text.   Scripture is not served up to us on a buffet table; we cannot selectively pick and choose the parts we like and discard the rest as "outmoded".  God is not out to win any popularity contests.

(On the other hand, I'll bet we'd be able to pack those pews on Sunday morning if we could find some clever ways to get around some of those pesky Commandments...especially that one about "thy neighbor's wife!")

OK, I'm done.  This time, I promise.
