That is an interesting topic.  Our county recorder is a Realtor.  I believe that she turned her license into the Division of Real Estate to hold as "inactive" while she is the Recorder.  I believe that she remains involved with the Association of Realtors, but she is not (and cannot) sell houses while her license is inactive.  
In Ohio, a Recorder is only required to work one day each quarter so it would be possible to hold another job. And, I do not believe that there is any legal prohibition on being employed in the real estate sector.  However, there could be a conflict of interest that would at least appear inappropriate.  
 Politically, I'm not sure it would be a good move.
