I have not independently researched the law, but the way the Florida exemption is explained by the appraiser's web page, if a married couple takes title in a tenancy by the entireties, both spouses get the full amount of the exemption. I presume that for other types of joint ownership only one of the owners can take the full exemption, or each owner can take a fractional exemption equivalent to their fractional ownership. So the couple would presumably have to go to an attorney and do whatever it takes to convey the property to the both of them as a married couple, and then go to the appraisers office to register so they can both get the full exemption.
