I agree.  Thank you, Deb, for sharing the story.  It is human nature to want to help family when they are in trouble.  These scammers know that.  I have even heard that they do their reserach so they know names of family members to make their scams more believable.  When you get news of something... like a car accident or an arrest... I think it is natural to panic a bit.  You are more worried about whether everyone is okay and how you can help, and you aren't thinking "is this some kind of scam?"  I can see how it happens and unfortunately, we all need to be skeptical now.
