I'm not sure how you can tell that this was not a well thought out estate plan.  It does appear to be a simple will, which is probably a good thing, and it leaves everything to his trust.  I'm sure the trust is much more complex.  Wills are public record, so anyone desiring any privacy would probably keep their will very simple like this.
