I suspect that the exit of the two insurance providers and the withdrawal Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield was motivated by profit more than anything else. I have spoken to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield during the past year. They are located only about 15 miles away from me. Believe me their rates are beyond the blue horizon.

I agree with your assessment. It would be nice if their motives were more altruistic, but the sad reality is that health insurers would not be in the business if they couldn't make money doing it.

With respect to the Husky Plan for children which serves as the model for the Charter Oak Plan...it has been in existence for quite a few years. While Atty Toubman is welcome to his opinion...it is still only one man's opinion. I can think of worse problems than having to change a physician. I have personally spoken to both physicians and parents that use the Husky Plan. All so far to whom I have spoken are satisfied with it.

"Just one man's opinion"?  House Majority Leader Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) had asked your Governor to delay implementing the program because it puts the HUSKY program at risk, according to an article from the Hartford Courant:

The request by House Majority Leader Christopher G. Donovan, D-Meriden, comes as child advocates complain that [Governor M. Jodi] Rell's plan may disrupt coverage for needy children.

The Rell administration intends to merge Charter Oak with the well-established HUSKY health plan for 320,000 low-income children and adults who are eligible for Medicaid.

Child advocates question the wisdom of risking the much larger HUSKY program to make viable a Charter Oak plan that will only serve an estimated 20,000 adults next year and about 50,000 by 2011.

"We're very concerned about the HUSKY program," Donovan said. "She's tied it to the Charter Oak plan. It doesn't seem to be going anywhere."

Child advocates seem to be of the same opinion as Anthem BC/BS, that covering uninsured adults may prove too expensive to keep the program viable and that it could jeopardize the HUSKY program.
