"There is nothing political about the job."  I would, shall we say, non-concur.  A recorder has great discretionary power, so consequently, the job is political, just not in the ordinary partisan sense of the word.

That said, historically in my state, we have a nearly opposite problem - the job is often considered the turf of local real estate insiders.
