That's the thing about lawyers. You can't afford them; but then again, you can't afford not to have one when the chips are down.  You are learning that lesson now I am afraid.  There are some good ones out there that can be affordable or will work with you on deferred payments.  Call your local bar association or community lawyer referral service.  Or just Google it.
