In many jurisdictions, writing a bad check is criminal. There are also some statutes that may allow an award of punitive damages in an amount of 3 times the amount of the bad check in a civil action. May not apply in your state, and it could be difficult pursuing if the client is out of state. Might be worth asking your attorney if you have any recourse. Even if it wouldn't be practical to pursue, a strongly worded letter a lawyer, citing the relevant statute, may motivate someone to pay what they owe.
